Do you listen to vintage music? Have a collection (or are dying to start one) of vintage guitars? Is your wardrobe full of rock t shirts of legendary guitar players? Does a good guitar solo send you into raptures? If so, (if he’s not already on there) you should add Jimi Hendrix to the list of musicians on your favorites list.

Jimi Hendrix was an American guitarist and singer-songwriter, and he is often considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music. He is one of the most important, influential musicians of his era. Jimi Hendrix won many of the most prestigious rock music awards during his lifetime, and has been posthumously awarded many more, including being inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the UK Music Hall of Fame.

He was so important, and such a powerful part of our musical history that Fender Musical Instruments Corporation makes a Jimi Hendrix guitar in their Tribute line, something that is reserved for the most revered artists. The guitar can be made almost exactly like the actual guitar that Jimi Hendrix played, with one small difference. It’s a guitar for right handed players, but it has a left-handed vintage white body with a reverse headstock oval profile maple-cap neck. The guitar is strung upside down with the strap button on the lower horn, and has a backwards 68 thick black CBS headstock decal, so that if you see yourself in a mirror, it looks ‘right’, the way that Jimi Hendrix played it. The controls and electrics are vintage-style but modern so that they are more stable.

As well as the upside-down left-handed Stratocaster for right-handed players, Fender also made four exact copies of the Vintage white Stratocaster Jimi Hendrix used in many of his performances. The most famous of the performances that he used it in was Woodstock in 1969. Fender dismantled the original so that they could make as close a copy as possible with every little detail perfect. Only one of these guitars is owned by a public person, and the other three are owned by Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, The Danneman Family, and The Hendrix Estate.

Fender also made another Jimi Hendrix guitar, called the VoodooCaster. The VoodooCaster has a right-handed body with a reverse headstock and reverse bridge pickup for the same effect, but a right handed person can play it without awkwardness and without hitting their arm on the upside down controls.

Though it’s been forty years since his death, Jimi Hendrix’s popularity has never waned, as proved by the sales of his music and the many rock t shirts proclaiming his status as a guitar god. If you haven’t listened to his music, you’ll want to remedy that right away. And then you just might want some of those rock t shirts.

His grave site attracts thousands of visitors yearly)

To celebrate Dia de los Muertos, honoring lost loved ones, here’s a guide to grave sites of noted residents from our past. By Tan Vinh Seattle Times staff reporter The spirits would turn over in their graves if they saw how some of the living treat Dia de los Muertos like Halloween. “The Day of the Dead,” as it is called, asks people to celebrate the spirits, not fear them, with Mexican families building elaborate altars, leaving marigolds and food to pay their respects to the spirits, believed to return on Nov. 1 and 2. In honor of that holiday, we look at some of the Puget Sound area’s sacred and famous grave sites, including one body that showman P.T. Barnum supposedly tried to buy:

We start at Seattle’s Lake View Cemetery, 1554 15th Ave E., on Capitol Hill. Historians always start at Lake View. Much of the city’s history is buried here — the famous and the infamous. • Madame Lou Graham operated arguably the most successful brothel during the mid-1800s at the corner of Third Avenue South and South Washington Street. She ran the classiest brothel, too, historians say, complete with piano player and a chef. Her grave is near the cemetery’s exit, near Volunteer Park. • Mary Ann Conklin (1821-1873). Her original gravestone lists 1887, the wrong death year. She operated the city’s first hotel, The Felker House, but is known more for operating a brothel on the top floor. Also known as Mother Damnable, Conklin was infamous for her hot temper and foul language. Stories had it that at least six men were needed to lift her coffin from a flood zone to Lake View Cemetery because her body had calcified into stone after water had seeped through her coffin. Scientists, though, doubt that could have happened. Nevertheless, P.T. Barnum heard about a 1,000 pound stone body and unsuccessfully tried to buy her body for his freak show, according to local historian Rick Boetel. Most of the city’s founders and their extended families are also buried here. (A few are also buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in upper Queen Anne, 700 W. Raye St.) Among those buried in Lake View include Chief Sealth’s daughter Princess Angeline, Arthur Denny, David Swinson “Doc” Maynard, Thomas Mercer and Henry Yesler. Maynard, one of Seattle’s founding fathers, has a new granite stone. The local branch of E Clampus Vitus, a historical preservation group, along with other civic groups and historians, raised money to buy a $1,200 tombstone for Maynard. His old, weather-beaten marble tombstone has been donated to Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry. None, though, draws more tourists than the grave of martial-arts film star Bruce Lee. Fans from around the world, especially China, make the pilgrimage to his red marble headstone, inset with a ceramic picture made in Hong Kong. His only son, Brandon Lee, also an actor, is buried beside him. advertising In 1995, several news reports said that Lake View declined to have rock star Kurt Cobain buried there because cemetery officials already had their hands full dealing with large crowds for Lee’s memorial. (Cobain was cremated and his ashes were scattered at a New York Buddhist temple and in the Wishkah River near his hometown, Aberdeen. Some ashes were given to his widow, Courtney Love. Last year, Love reported that someone stole his ashes from her Los Angeles home.) For more info, see www.lakeviewcemeteryassociation.com and findagrave.com. Other interesting sites around the area: Chief Sealth, also known as Chief Seattle, a great chief of the Suquamish and Duwamish tribes, for whom the city was named, is buried on the Kitsap Peninsula in the Suquamish Memorial Cemetery, 7076 N.E. South St., Suquamish. His gravesite is getting a $100,000 makeover that will be completed by next summer. There’s a new wheelchair-accessible walkway and a new concrete and stone ring around the grave, engraved with a famous speech in English and his native Lushootseed language. The site is open to the public during renovation, with visitors recently leaving a rolled-up cigarette and handmade bracelets. Check www.chiefseattle.com/history/chiefseattle/chief_gravesite.htm. Rock icon Jimi Hendrix is buried in Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetery, 350 Monroe Ave. N.E., Renton. His gravesite draws about 50,000 to 60,000 visitors annually, with hundreds of fans from around the world visiting during Christmas holidays and on Hendrix’s birthday, Nov. 27. On Nov. 26, 2002, Hendrix’s body was reburied under a large granite dome supported by three marble columns.

The first time Jimi Hendrix burnt his guitar onstage at the end of a performance was in London in 1967, and after the show he had to be taken to the hospital to get treatment, having suffered mild burns to his hand. Despite the insult to his dignity, it was a move that made Hendrix extremely popular internationally, and it turned him into an icon of his generation. Right after his first guitar-burning incident, with the help of Paul McCartney, the Jimi Hendrix Experience was given a chance to perform in the United States, at the Monterey International Pop Festival. It gave Jimi another chance to woo American audiences, who hadn’t exactly flipped over his first single.

There was a huge audience present at the Monterey Festival, but more importantly, many journalists were also covering the event, and they wrote about him. At the finale of his performance, Jimi Hendrix squirted lighter fluid on his Stratocaster and set it on fire. And even more importantly: they filmed the festival, and it was shown in movie theaters throughout the country as the concert documentary Monterey Pop, which immortalized forever Hendrix’s burning and smashing of his guitar. This combination of events made him an instant American celebrity. Jimi cemented his iconic status by headlining at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. All of a sudden, Jimi Hendrix was a star, and everyone wanted to be him, wanted to look like him. Jimi Hendrix shirts popped up everywhere, and men began wearing scarves and rings, medallions, and brooches. Dashikis became more mainstream and popular after Jimi wore one on the Dick Cavett show.

A photo taken by Jim Marshal, showing Jimi Hendrix kneeling above his burning guitar while wearing a ruffled shirt appeared on his later album covers. Twenty years later, Rolling Stone magazine put that same photo on the cover of its 20th anniversary issue.

He was a worldwide star until his death in 1970, at the age of 27.

But Jimi Hendrix’ iconic status still goes on. The first guitar that he burned onstage recently brought nearly half a million dollars at auction. Apparently, after he set the guitar on fire and had to be taken to the hospital, it was taken to the offices of his aide, who kept it at his parent’s garage in Southern England. A nephew of the aide found the guitar in 2007, and brought it to auction.

Jimi Hendrix was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was dedicated in 1994. In 2006, his debut album, Are You Experienced, was inducted into the United States National Recording Preservation Board’s National Recording Registry. And Rolling Stone named Hendrix number 1 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. He is still a rock legend.

Jimi Hendrix was well known for his unique sense of fashion style, his highly original wardrobe, and his hairstyle. As a matter of fact, a set of hair curlers was one of the few things that he took with him to England when he first went there in 1966. Jimi was a clothes-hound, and when his first advance check arrived, he immediately went on a shopping spree in London, searching for distinctive clothing at vintage boutiques. He wanted items that fit his particular sense of style, and he found them there. He was enamored with army dress uniform jackets, and purchased at least two, including an old Hussar’s jacket adorned with tassels.

At the beginning of his career, Jimi wore a dark suit and plain silk shirts while onstage, but these suits became increasingly louder and more psychedelically patterned as his career progressed. He later sported a bright blue velvet suit, and then a bright red one, and one with very broad stripes. He often wore his antique military dress jackets, patterned silk and velvet jackets, assorted exotic vests and waistcoats, and flared pants in bright colors.

Jimi didn’t have many inhibitions, and he mixed and matched things into his wardrobe that traditionally only women wore. Many photographs of Hendrix show him wearing flowing scarves tied to one leg and one arm. He often wore brooches pinned to some article of his clothing, and he loaded up on rings, necklaces, and medallions. And when he played at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967, he wore a bright pink feather boa. Eric Burdon of The Animals recalls seeing a girl backstage at Monterey fling the boa around Jimi’s neck. Regardless of where he got it, he would be seen in the feathery pink accessory countless times after that.

He had a love affair with hats, as well. He was fond of a wide-brimmed Western style hat. It had a narrow purple band and he decorated it with various brooches. The hat was later stolen from him, and he replaced it with another of the same type that he tied a long purple scarf onto, and embellished with a brooch and a set of silver bangles. Sometimes he stuck an angled feather into it. He also went through a bandana phase, giving up the hats for a period of time.

He started wearing more and more fantastic, custom-made stage costumes. They all had long trailing sleeves, and one of his most famous outfits during this period was the African-styled outfit that he wore throughout most of his final tour. Some of his more unforgettable attire included a blue kimono-style jacket that he wore in three TV appearances and a white fringed jacket decorated with blue glass beads that he wore at Woodstock.

With his ever-evolving style, Jimi Hendrix was a true fashion icon of his time. He experimented with different clothing, and started trends and vogues that are still popular, both with entertainers and the public. The Jimi Hendrix Shirt and jackets are fashionable even today, decades after his death.
